The Official Lighting of the Crooked River Lighthouse Beacon took place on Saturday, December 8th at Lighthouse Park as part of the City of Carrabelle Holiday on the Harbor & Boat Parade of Lights. Also, at this event visitors were introduced to the newest addition to Lighthouse Park, a children’s playground, anchored by a 70 foot long pirate ship, the Carrabella.

As part of the restoration effort, we are working with the Coast Guard to install a navigation light in the Crooked River Lighthouse and re-commission the light!

In 2007 The Governor Crist and the Florida Legislature designated funding in the neighborhood of $400,000 for a park and restoration, which includes building a replica of the Keeper's house for a museum.

Kenneth Smith, Architects, Jacksonville, was approved by the Carrabelle City Commission as the awarding bid winner to perform the assessment and begin restoration in Spring of 2007, Extreme Makeover - Lighthouse Edition - Season Premier. Phase I is to be completed in 6 months.

The City of Carrabelle, on behalf of the CLA, was awarded a grant from The Florida Communities Trust for the purpose of purchasing two acres of land surrounding the lighthouse. A management plan is in place for the development of a public "park." The land is cleared and new picnic tables are in place under a covered pavilion. The park is open 365 days, dawn to dusk.

The CLA was awarded $15,000 from the Franklin County Tourist Development Council to conduct a fundraising event. October 14 started with a Family Pirates Picnic, complete with strolling pirate minstrels, a treasure hunt in our manmade beach, food, fun, and games. Later that evening a dinner-dance for the adults took place. Proceeds from the day's events exceeded $6000. These funds will be applied as matching funds for a grant  application for Phase II of the restoration.

Event Winners:

  • Cruise Raffle: Stephanie Dingler

  • Quilt: Kathi Jones

  • Essay Contest: Angela Ochala

  • Tackiest Tourist: Skip Frink and Doug Dedrick (tied for first place)
